One spin, a little blessing.

A handbag can be more than something we carry every day. At BAMPO, we believe small details can also bring a little joy to everyday life.

That was the idea behind the Hulu Blessing Compass, first created as a signature detail for the Flow Zen Hobo. Designed to be spun and enjoyed, it adds a small moment of interaction to the bag. Today, the Hulu Blessing Compass is also available as a standalone charm, so you can carry its little blessing with you in your own way.

Inspired by the traditional symbolism of the Hulu, the Hulu Blessing Compass was designed to bring a small moment of joy to the everyday.

The idea was simple. Bringing it to life was not.

From the pattern and hardware to the movement of the Hulu Blessing Compass itself, the design went through more than 20 rounds of changes and nearly six months of development before the final version was ready.

Finding the Right Pattern

The pattern turned out to be one of the biggest challenges in the design process.

The team explored more than 10 rounds of pattern development over roughly half a month, with the direction evolving along the way. After considering different possibilities, the team became drawn to oracle bone script, one of the earliest forms of Chinese writing.

What made it interesting was its unique visual quality. Oracle bone script sits somewhere between writing and imagery—its characters are rooted in meaning, but their pictorial forms also make them feel almost like little illustrations.

For the team, this offered the right balance: something visually lively and playful, while still carrying a deeper cultural meaning.

After several rounds of discussion and internal voting, the oracle bone script design was finally selected.

But here’s the fun part: can you guess what the symbols on the Compass mean?

Take a closer look and leave your guesses in the comments. We’d love to see what you come up with.

And the design doesn’t have to stop here. The Hulu Blessing Compass can also be customized, allowing different symbols and wishes to become part of your own Compass.

Finding the Right Form

With the pattern settled, the team turned to the physical form of the Hulu itself.

The hardware went through 5–6 different design versions, each followed by physical samples and further adjustments. Proportions, curves, details, and the overall appearance were refined over nearly two months.

What may seem like a small piece of hardware required the same level of attention as any other part of the bag.

But there was still one important question left:

How should it spin?

Getting the Spin Right

Making the Hulu rotate smoothly became another challenge of its own.

The team tested several versions of the rotating mechanism and worked through different bearings to find the right combination. After repeated testing and discussions with the hardware manufacturer, one standard was eventually set:

The Hulu needed to keep spinning for at least 8–10 seconds before coming to a stop.

That small window of movement makes the spin feel smoother and more natural. Anything shorter simply didn't feel quite right.

From the first drawings to the final working hardware, the entire development process took nearly six months, with more than 20 rounds of changes along the way.

Why So Many Changes?

Because sometimes, the smallest details take the most work.

For BAMPO, creating the Hulu Blessing Compass was not about adding another decorative element to a handbag. It was about creating a detail that could carry meaning, invite interaction, and bring a small moment of joy into someone's everyday routine.

Every adjustment brought the design a little closer to what the team had imagined—from finding the right pattern, to shaping the hardware, to making sure the spin felt just right.

In the end, the Hulu Blessing Compass became a small detail with a bigger purpose: a moment to pause, spin, and carry a little good fortune with you.

One spin, a little blessing.
