Giving Back

Since 2013, every purchase you make helps preserve a disappearing minority culture and support Dong communities.

How it started?

In 2013, during a research trip to Guizhou, China, founder HUANG Lang and the design team discovered the Dong communities and Dong cloth in a quiet mountain village.

Life there moves with nature—people farm, weave, and gather at sunset to sing and dance. Inspired by its beauty and cultural richness, they began collaborating with local artisans to create Dong-cloth bags.

What are the challenges?

With no written script, Dong songs, patterns, and craftsmanship are passed down through voice, memory, and the hands of artisans. This living heritage exists only in people who remember it and continue to teach it.

Over time, we saw many young people leaving for cities, fewer learning traditional crafts, and limited access to education and stable income. As a result, these traditions risk being lost within a generation.

How can we help?

We have conducted research, and our designers have lived long-term in Dong communities, working closely with artisans and listening to their feedback.

Together, we have built a “Folk Art Ecosystem” that connects artisans, designers, and consumers, creating a sustainable cycle that supports both cultural heritage and economic value.

The Impact

Every piece sold has helped support Dong communities through these 4 areas:

Economic Returns

  • Artisans receive 5% above-market prices for the Dong-cloth and semi-finished goods.
  • Women gain flexible, home-based work that allows them to care for children and elders.
  • We revived a local tea plantation and developed hotels to support cultural tourism and create local jobs.

Educational Support

  • Our designers collaborate with local artisans to bridge traditional skills and new techniques, offering young people training opportunities and paid internships.
  • A village library has been built, providing children with access to learning resources in art, design, and material science.

Cultural Visibility

  • Dong-cloth textures were integrated into modern leather handbag design.
  • Through exhibitions, runway shows at tea plantations, and visual installations in campaign shoots—shared through articles, livestreams, and social media—Dong culture has reached a wider global audience.

Eco-friendly Practices

  • The growing demand for Dong-cloth has helped more people discover this natural plant-dyeing craft, while also raising awareness of environmental protection.
  • We use natural and organic farming methods in our tea plantations to support more sustainable production.
