Our Beginning
Our founder once visited the Banpo site museum near Xi’an, China. The Banpo village was a Neolithic settlement that existed more than 6,000 years ago, a time when food was scarce and living conditions were harsh.
Inside the museum, he saw bowls painted with fish, vessels shaped like gourds, and bone hairpins and stone necklaces. The patterns and shapes of these objects could not serve hunting or any other practical purpose. Yet the potters still took the time to paint and sculpt with care, simply to make life more beautiful.
Our founder realized that even in such difficult times, our ancestors never gave up their desire for beauty. They decorated their pots. They adorned themselves. They turned everyday objects into art.
Beauty is not a necessity for survival, but it is essential for a meaningful life.
That realization became the reason we started Bampo. We want to preserve the beautiful symbols our ancestors created. We draw inspiration from traditional culture. We continue their understanding of beauty in our own time.
The Two Meanings of “Banpo”
In Chinese, the word半坡（bàn pō） has a literal meaning: halfway up the hill.
This meaning carries two ideas that shape our brand.
Meaning One: The Present Moment
Halfway up the hill is a position between past and future. When you stand there, you can look forward to the peak ahead and look back at the valley behind you.
The view from this spot would not be possible without the climb your ancestors made before you. Their effort brought you here. Their wisdom supports you.
The fish and gourd patterns from Banpo carried blessings from our ancestors: abundance, protection, good fortune. Those blessings still give us strength today. When we put these patterns on our handbags, we are passing those blessings to you.
Meaning Two: The Balanced State
Halfway up the hill is also a place of pause and renewal.
You have climbed enough to feel proud. You can stop for a moment, turn around, and admire the view. You see how far you have come. There is a quiet satisfaction in that.
But you are not finished. The peak is still ahead. After resting and reflecting, you continue climbing. Not because someone is pushing you. Not because you must match anyone else’s pace. You move forward in your own way. At your own speed. This is our slogan: Rise in your way.
In Chinese culture, this idea connects to the Doctrine of the Mean (中庸). True excellence is not found at the extremes. The top of the mountain is not the only form of success. The halfway point can be a state of completeness on its own. It is balanced. It is harmonious. It is a different kind of perfection.
You do not need to be at the top to feel fulfilled. You can find satisfaction exactly where you are, while still growing and moving forward.
